How It Works

Three steps. One visit. Everything in order.

Built for homeowners whose solar systems are generating and exporting — but whose electrical protection hasn't been reviewed since installation.

01 / ASSESS
🔍
System Review
Consumer unit age, inverter voltage, smart meter status, and surge protection presence are assessed against current BS7671 and Ofgem requirements. Your exact compliance position is confirmed.
02 / PROTECT
🔌
Consumer Unit & Surge Protection
Where a pre-2016 consumer unit or missing SPD is identified, the appropriate protection devices are installed. All works are fully certified to BS7671 standards and signed off by NAPIT-registered engineers.
03 / ACTIVATE
📡
Export & Reporting
100% metered export activated via Smart Export Guarantee (Ofgem). Fortnightly generation and consumption reports begin. Annual DNO compliance submissions managed on your behalf for the full service term.
Eligibility

What qualifies your home.

Homeowners with an existing solar installation and a smart meter — particularly on systems installed before 2019 — may be entitled to compliance protection, funded upgrades, and managed export income.

Consumer Unit — The Silent Gap
Under BS7671 18th Edition (IET Wiring Regulations), consumer units must meet current circuit protection standards. Pre-2016 units often lack the RCD and SPD protection now required where a solar PV system is present and exporting. Most homeowners were never told at the time of installation.

📡
Smart Meter & Export Payments
Under the Smart Export Guarantee (Ofgem, 2020), eligible suppliers are required to offer an export tariff to small-scale generators. To qualify, you need a smart meter capable of measuring export. Without one, energy sent back to the grid is unmetered and unpaid.

🔥
Surge Protection — Now Required
BS7671 Amendment 2 (2022), Regulation 716.443, specifically requires Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) on all prosumer installations — meaning any home with solar PV connected to the grid. Solar arrays are particularly susceptible to transient overvoltages from lightning and grid switching events.

📋
Feed-in Tariff — Active & Protected
Solar systems installed between 2009 and 2019 hold a government-guaranteed FIT contract running 20 to 25 years. This pays a fixed rate for every unit generated. The ECO Protection Scheme is designed to ensure the electrical compliance underpinning this income is maintained for the full remaining term.

The Regulations

What the regulations actually say.

Every point below is sourced directly from the IET, Ofgem, or BSI. Written plainly.

REGULATION REQUIREMENT
Consumer Unit & RCD Protection
BS7671 18th Edition requires RCD protection on all socket-outlet and lighting circuits in domestic properties. Pre-2016 consumer units typically lack dual RCD or RCBO protection now required where a solar PV system is present. This is not advisory — it is the current standard for any altered or reviewed installation.

SPD — NOW MANDATORY FOR SOLAR
Surge Protection on PV Installations
BS7671 Amendment 2 (2022), Regulation 716.443, specifically requires SPDs on prosumer installations — any home with solar PV connected to the grid. Both AC SPDs at the consumer unit and DC SPDs at the solar array are addressed. The amendment states that solar arrays are particularly susceptible to lightning-induced overvoltages.

OFGEM ENTITLEMENT
Smart Export Guarantee
Launched in 2020, the Ofgem Smart Export Guarantee requires licensed suppliers with over 150,000 customers to offer an export tariff to all eligible small-scale generators. By the end of SEG Year 5 (March 2025), 270,395 installations were registered. If your system is not registered, exported energy goes uncompensated.

PROTECTED INCOME
Feed-in Tariff Contract
Solar systems installed between 2009 and 2019 hold a government-guaranteed FIT contract for 20 to 25 years — a fixed payment per unit generated, protected from energy price fluctuations. The ECO Protection Scheme ensures compliance is maintained for its full remaining term.
